以《百元之恋》获得日本学院奖最佳编剧等诸多奖项的足立绅，将自己的半自传体小说《窝囊废日记》搬上了银幕。本片是关西小杰尼斯团体“Boysbe”成员池川侑希弥初登银幕之作，以昭和末期某个地方小镇的7个6年级男生为主角，描绘了他们的一段充满欢笑、泪水、纠葛、挑战的少年时代。有别于那些带着光晕、略显苍白的同类作品，足立绅以一种近乎坦率的姿态与青春“直球对决”，直接、生猛，充满力量。足立绅还在片中使用了传奇导演相米慎二的招牌长镜头，向这位曾经的恩师致敬，也捕捉到了少年们最生动鲜活的完美状态。
齐宝厨不学无术，仅靠烧的一口好菜混到酒楼厨子的位子，陆艺珍的到来，让他都掉了主厨的位子，只好在酒楼对面摆摊卖臭豆腐，他与陆艺珍的梁子也就接下，两人相爱相斗，宝厨的厨艺也在这过程中逐渐成长。
